May Mobility Partners With Uber To Deploy Autonomous Taxis in The U.S.

, May Mobility has become the latest autonomous vehicle operator to team up with Uber Technologies in an effort to attract more passengers to its self-driving taxi services.

On May 1, May Mobility announced that its partnership with Uber will launch in Arlington, Texas, by the end of 2025. The two companies plan to deploy "thousands" of autonomous vehicles across various U.S. markets through Uber's ride-hailing network. The initial fleet will include safety drivers, with a gradual transition to fully driverless operations. Starting next year, the partnership aims to expand services to additional cities.

Backed by Toyota and BMW, May Mobility has raised over $383 million through nine funding rounds. The company currently operates a fleet of Toyota Sienna minivans retrofitted with its proprietary autonomous driving hardware and software. May Mobility offers ride-hailing services in geo-fenced areas, including business districts, university campuses, and closed residential communities like Sun City, a retirement community known for its ease of mapping.

Notably, May Mobility and Uber are not exclusive partners. May Mobility has also partnered with Lyft to launch autonomous vehicles on the Lyft platform, with service expected to begin later this year in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, Uber has been steadily forming alliances with autonomous vehicle operators in a bid to become a one-stop shop for autonomous ride-hailing and delivery services. In addition to May Mobility, Uber has entered into passenger vehicle partnerships with companies like Waymo, Motional, Aurora, WeRide, and Volkswagen, and has also collaborated with delivery-focused firms such as Serve, Cartken, and Nuro.

Furthermore, on May 3 (Beijing time), Chinese autonomous driving firm Momenta announced a strategic partnership with Uber to bring autonomous vehicles to Uber's platform for international markets outside the U.S. and China. The first phase of commercial deployment is scheduled for early 2026 in Europe, initially using safety drivers. By combining Uber's ride-hailing network with Momenta's autonomous driving technology, the two companies aim to accelerate the global rollout of safe and reliable autonomous mobility services.
